On Saturday 22nd May we’d just reached the summit of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK. With training consisting of one Peak District Hill climb 🙈 it was tough!
My internet search history contained ‘how many fatalities have there been climbing Ben Nevis?’ ‘What should I expect when hiking Ben Nevis?’ – one statement I remember kept popping up was ‘Don’t underestimate Nevis’. I can now confirm that statement was true.
It took 4 hours to climb to the summit. It was raining, the wind didn’t let up and it was 1344m of rocky, slippery terrain. ‘The stairway to hell’ as I like to call it.
When we reached the top the temperature plummeted. So much so I couldn’t feel my fingers. My shoes had filled with water so the three hour hike down was fun!!
But despite all that it was really fun. The scenery on the way up was out of this world and that feeling of achievement when you touch the cairn at the top (albeit with frost bite) is indescribable.
In summary Ben Nevis taught me three things…
1. Ben Nevis is very tall and no walk in the park
2. Always put spare clothes in a waterproof bag
3. If you really want to do something and put your mind to it, you can achieve anything.
One of the NCUK’s Ambassadors, Mark, passed away not so long ago so I did this not only to raise money for charity but in his memory. Mark was such a beautiful soul and so full of life and I know he would have been cheering me on the whole way.
I have managed to raise over £750 for NCUK, which is incredible! Thank you so so much to everyone who donated.
