Ongoing Creon® Shortage Continues into 2027

Sep 29, 2026

We understand the continued concern and frustration many people are experiencing as the shortage of Creon® (pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy) persists. For many individuals living with neuroendocrine cancer, pancreatic cancer, chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis and other conditions affecting pancreatic function, access to PERT is essential for maintaining nutrition, managing symptoms, and supporting quality of life.

As of September 2026, the UK’s Serious Shortage Protocols (SSPs) for Creon® gastro-resistant capsules remain in place and have now been extended until 2 October 2026. Limited and capped supplies are expected to continue throughout the remainder of 2026.

To help preserve available stock and ensure fair access, pharmacists are currently authorised under the SSPs to dispense no more than one month’s supply per prescription. While this measure is intended to support continuity of treatment for as many patients as possible, we recognise that it may create additional anxiety and inconvenience for those who rely on Creon® every day.

Although alternative pancreatic enzyme replacement therapies (PERT), including Nutrizym® 22 and Pancrex V®, remain available, current supplies are insufficient to fully address the gap in Creon® availability. These alternative products are therefore being prioritised for people who are unable to take Creon®.

The new manufacturing facility being developed by Abbott and Viatris is now expected to complete its production phase by the end of 2026, with finished products anticipated to enter distribution during early 2027. However, supply constraints are expected to continue until then.

What to do if you’re struggling to obtain Creon®

  • If you are having difficulty sourcing your prescription:
  • Speak to your pharmacist and prescribing healthcare team as early as possible.
  • Allow extra time when requesting repeat prescriptions.
  • Do not reduce, stop, or alter your medication without professional medical advice.
